Michelle over at Scribbit is hosting a writing contest for a Starbucks giftcard. Since I am a self-professed Starbucks hot chocolate addict (just like her), I wanted to throw my hat into the ring for this prize. I was really drawn into her choice of topic, which is First Kiss. And so, here is my entry. Enjoy!
It was August 18th, 1994. A Thursday night. The temperature was warm. Eager anticipation rode the waves of humidity that cut through the thick night air. We had spoken on the phone every night this week. When he asked me to drop by that evening, I said "I'd love to!" I had no problem finding his place. I had been driving by it every day that week.
He escorted me up the MANY stairs to his apartment and we settled into the weathered couch for a long evening of talking, talking and more talking. What seemed like only minutes turned into hours and soon it was midnight. He reached over the back of the couch into a table drawer. He pulled out a small white envelope and handed it to me.
I opened the envelope and pulled out a small card with a teddy bear pictured on it. Inside were the words Happy Birthday. He remembered! We had only known each other a week and he remembered a casual mention of my birthday being the 19th. What a sweetie! I thanked him with a hug and we talked for a while longer. I didn't want to leave, despite knowing that our first date would occur later that day. I knew it was time to leave, so he offered to walk me to my car. Such a gentleman.
We arrived at my car and after a few minutes of nervous chatter, he leaned in to kiss my cheek. All of a sudden, I turned my head and our lips met. I didn't want the moment to end. He was surprised by my forwardness, but not surprised enough to pull away. The moment that began a lifetime together only lasted a few seconds, but the memory of it will last forever.
